Somehow successfully combining sun-blessed stoner rock, retro groove and doom metal, Greek rockers Lizardia are a band to keep an eye on when it comes to writing accessible yet heavy metal. The quartet consists of vocalist Bluff, guitarist Jeje, bassist Gary and drummer Pijo, and on this ten-track debut they’ve married to effect elements of cosmic rock with the usual Black Sabbath-inspired blackness with a sprig of psychedelia.
The album opens with “Turn To Smoke” and I can almost instantly hear influence from classic old school doom bands like Pentagram, and rock similar to Wiseblood era Corrosion Of Conformity. This song sets the mood with a feel-good vibe that sounds familiar. I really like “Tomorrows Gift,” if anything because I’m a sucker for that fuzzy guitar tone. My absolute favorite is the seventh track “Mountshake.” It’s more doom-heavy than the rest of the album with a simple, but memorable bassline. The vocals are so melodic that I find myself wanting to sing along before I even know the lyrics. You’ll also hear blues-rock in this nearly eight-minute long jam. The album ends with “Aurora On Jupiter,” a 12-minute long song that is coated in psychedelia. This makes for a nice surprise and is a great way to end the album.
While Lizardia may not be headlining major tours or selling out stadiums, I will say that they’ve created a solid record and that this album will win them over many fans from all over the world. Trust me on this, if you dig groovy stoner rock, this album will be right up your alley.
